The Challenge – In a continuously changing network environment that relies on software from multiple third-party vendors, and that must be able to interact seamlessly, vulnerability management and remediation was always very time-consuming. Systems must be secured in a timely manner without impacting performance or availability.
Citizens Bank & Trust has developed a comprehensive security program which involves several layers of defenses and monitoring. The vulnerability management portion of this program consists of regular network resources scanning to look for new vulnerabilities and exploits that are being discovered daily. Previously, much of this process was a manual effort to scan, remediate, and correlate trends. The level of information provided about vulnerabilities and how to remediate them varies by vendor, as well as different methods of classifying how critical the vulnerability is. SAINT provides a wide selection of resources to research a vulnerability and, when available, actually attempts an exploit check on them to lend credence to which vulnerabilities should be addressed first.
The Solution – The SAINTbox appliance is used to implement SAINT vulnerability scanning and SAINTexploit penetration testing throughout the various nodes of the network. Major strengths of the SAINT solution are the ability to perform these tests in both attended and unattended modes, as well as custom reporting and trending capabilities.
Any vulnerability scanner can scan ports and search for certain vulnerabilities.
